Calculate flooring materials needed for your project
Calculate the amount of flooring material needed for your room. Works for hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile, and carpet. Always add waste factor for cuts and mistakes.
Measure the length and width of your room at the widest points in feet. Multiply length × width to get square footage. For irregular rooms, break them into rectangles and add the areas together.
Use 5-10% for simple rectangular rooms, 10-15% for standard rooms with closets or alcoves, and 15-20% for diagonal installations or complex room shapes. Always round up when ordering materials.
Costs vary by material: Vinyl ($2-7/sq ft), Laminate ($3-8/sq ft), Hardwood ($6-20/sq ft), Tile ($5-15/sq ft). Professional installation typically adds $3-8 per square foot depending on complexity.
Most floating floors (laminate, vinyl plank) require underlayment for moisture protection and sound dampening. Some products have attached underlayment. Hardwood and tile typically don't need it, but check manufacturer requirements.
